Indefinite detention becomes law

A new bill recently passed into Australian law (Migration Amendment Bill 2021, passed on May 13) will allow the Government to detain refugees and asylum seekers indefinitely, a move human rights activists, lawyers and immigration advocates say is unethical, and illegal under international human rights law.
The new law will allow Australia to hold refugees in mandatory detention centres indefinitely in cases where a person has had their refugee visa cancelled but cannot be deported because they face persecution in their home country. (anyone see the irony?)
Immigration Minister Alex Hawke said the new bill promotes human rights because it reinforces the nation’s commitment to non-refoulment, which forbids a country from deporting refugees or asylum seekers to their country of origin if they are at risk of persecution.
