MORE than 10,000 South Australians signed a petition, tabled in parliament, calling on the state to declare a climate emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Margaret Hender, 70, of Modbury Heights, said she started the petition with a few friends in 2019, when former Greens MLC Mark Parnell\u2019s motion to declare a climate emergency passed the upper house. Together they decided the next step was the lower house and sought the 10,000 signatures required to table an issue in parliament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe had people of a wide range of ages and walks of life signing,\u201d Ms Hender said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe general public is getting very concerned about the climate emergency and frustrated because we want governments to act faster really.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSo it\u2019s not like it\u2019s a narrow band of people anymore, (the concern is) quite widespread in the community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Opposition Climate Change spokeswoman Susan Close tabled the petition and gave notice of her intention to call on parliament to declare the SA climate emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
